Uhuru Breaks Silence on Claims of Planned Meeting With Gachagua

The Office of former President Uhuru Kenyatta has clarified reports claiming that he is set to meet former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

In a statement dated August 12, Uhuru said requests seeking a meeting between Kenyatta and Gachagua had been made on several occasions through different intermediaries, but no meeting had taken place or is being planned.

“The Office of the Fourth President of the Republic of Kenya wishes to address, with finality, the matter of the repeated requests conveyed to this office seeking a meeting between H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.”

“It is equally confirmed that H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta has considered these requests carefully and has declined them. No meeting has taken place, none is scheduled, and none is being contemplated.” 

Uhuru Rejects Meeting Citing Gachagua’s Political Conduct 

The former President’s office further explained that Uhuru’s decision was informed by his assessment of Gachagua’s conduct in politics and his relationships with other leaders.

According to the statement, Kenyatta has spent much of his political career building coalitions, nurturing partnerships and bringing people together around shared national interests.

Additionally, the office said the retired President had, however, observed what it described as a sustained pattern of behaviour by Gachagua that was inconsistent with those values.

It cited what it described as Gachagua’s “serial antagonism of partners,” public humiliation of allies and difficulty sustaining working relationships without turning them into conflicts.

The office further accused the former Deputy President of adopting a style of political engagement that prioritises personal dominance over collective progress.

Gachagua Defends Opposition Unity Amid Political Tensions 

Furthermore, the Office of Uhuru Kenyatta said the former President does not believe that a meeting with Gachagua under the current circumstances would be productive.

“H.E. Kenyatta does not believe that a meeting, under present circumstances, would be productive, for either party, or for the broader national interest that the retired President continues to hold dear.”

This clarification comes days after dismissed claims that his party is weakening smaller opposition outfits, insisting every political formation has room to compete and grow.

Speaking at his Wamunyoro residence, the former deputy president Gachagua said concerns that his party, DCP, wanted to absorb or eliminate other parties were misplaced and did not reflect his political position. 

Gachagua maintained that Kenya’s opposition would become stronger if several political parties remained active, recruited members, marketed their policies, and competed fairly for public support.
