CCM Expels Nchimbi Days After His Resignation as Tanzania’s Vice President

UPDATE: Tanzania’s Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi has been expelled from the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party, days after announcing his resignation over differences with President Samia Suluhu.
The CCM Secretary General, Dr. Asha-Rose Migiro, announced the decision on Wednesday evening, August 26, 2026, while speaking to journalists at the CCM Sub-Offices in Lumumba, Dar es Salaam.
The party expelled Dr. Nchimbi from its membership one day after he wrote to President Samia Suluhu Hassan requesting to resign as Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania. President Samia accepted his resignation.
Dr. Migiro said the decision followed resolutions reached by the CCM Central Committee and National Executive Committee during meetings held in Dar es Salaam from morning until Wednesday evening.
She said the meetings discussed, among other issues, ethical concerns involving Dr. Nchimbi before reaching a decision to expel him from the party.
Emmanuel John Nchimbi Resignation
Nchimbi resigned from office and announced his retirement from politics and public service, bringing his tenure to an end on September 4, 2026.
Nchimbi announced the decision on Tuesday, August 25, saying he had written to President Samia Suluhu Hassan to formally communicate his resignation. His decision comes less than a year after he took office as Vice President.

Nchimbi Explains Decision
Explaining his decision, Nchimbi referred to a promise he made to President Samia on August 27, 2025, when he pledged to support her and the country to the best of his ability.
He said he had also assured the President that he would leave office if she felt another Vice President was needed.
“I am satisfied beyond doubt that Hon. the President desires change, and therefore I have decided to fulfill my promise,” Nchimbi said in the statement.
He said his resignation was made under Article 50(2)(c), read together with Article 149(2) of Tanzania’s Constitution.

Nchimbi thanked President Samia and the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) for the confidence they placed in him during his time in office.
“In a special way, I thank Hon. the President and Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) for their trust in me,” he said.
He also thanked Tanzanians for their cooperation and support during his period in public service, saying his exit from politics would not change his commitment to the country, assuring Tanzanians that he would remain a good citizen.
“I assure you that I will continue to be a good citizen of Tanzania,” he said.
His resignation will officially take effect on September 4, 2026.
