Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has revealed that his decision to hold the parallel press conference in Mombasa on June 25, 2024, where he openly criticized National Intelligence Service (NIS) boss Noordin Haji and President William Ruto, was a result of pressure from his sons, who pushed him to speak out.
Speaking during an open forum with youths on Thursday afternoon, Gachagua said his sons asked him to address the nation after President Ruto called the youths ‘criminals’.
The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader said his sons were disappointed with the President’s words and asked to hold the explosive press conference.
“That statement I made in Mombasa, I was pushed by my sons. Everybody listens to their children. They told me Ruto called the youths criminals. My children sat me down and told me, ‘Dad, your boss has called us criminals’.They told me that I must immediately release a press statement and address the matter. I heard them because they are my children,” Gachagua said.
Gachagua asked the public to take a firm decision adding that their voices will be a key determinant in next election.
“Once you guys decide what should happen to this country, your voice matters. I tell you, nobody will argue with you. If you do the right thing, then history will judge you kindly,” Gachagua said.
The June 2024 press conference came amid the finance bill protests where Gachagua publicly condemned Haji for failing to advise President Ruto properly about the general feeling of the people.
Speaking in the US, Gachagua said the Mombasa press conference marked the end of his relationship with Ruto.
” That press conference brought our relationship to an end. After that day, we were not able to speak again,” Gachagua said.
