The 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings has placed Kenyatta University and the University of Nairobi among the top-ranked institutions in Kenya, reaffirming their status as leading centers of academic excellence and research in the region.
According to the data published by THE in partnership with Elsevier, Kenyatta University and the University of Nairobi are the only Kenyan universities to make it to the 1501+ global ranking bracket.
Both institutions demonstrated strong performances in teaching, research quality, and industry engagement — key indicators in the ranking methodology.
The University of Nairobi scored highly in research-related indicators, achieving 39.7 in research quality and 22.5 in industry engagement.
The institution also recorded 15.9 in teaching, reflecting its strong academic foundation and faculty competence.
Its overall score range was between 10.3 and 27.2, positioning it as one of the most research-active universities in the region.

Kenyatta University followed closely with impressive figures, scoring 34.2 in research quality and 17.4 in industry engagement.
It also posted a 14.3 score in teaching and 9.1 in research environment, within the same overall score range of 10.3–27.2.
The university’s performance highlights its growing influence in research collaboration and knowledge transfer initiatives between academia and industry.
Beyond the top two, several other Kenyan institutions were recognized as “Reporters” — meaning they provided data for evaluation but did not meet all criteria for full ranking.
These include Egerton University, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, Kabarak University, Karatina University, Kibabii University, Machakos University, Mount Kenya University, Murang’a University of Technology, and Riara University.
While these universities did not receive a specific ranking position, their inclusion signals growing participation in international ranking exercises and commitment to benchmarking against global academic standards.

The presence of Kenyan universities in the 2026 THE World Rankings underscores the country’s progress in higher education and research capacity.
