The National Police Service (NPS) on Thursday, October 9, 2025, held a consultative meeting with representatives from the United Nations (UN) at the NPS Headquarters in Nairobi to evaluate the Service’s preparedness for the upcoming General Election.
The meeting, which focused on strengthening Kenya’s election security framework, was chaired by the Director of Reforms, John Kamau, Assistant Inspector General (AIG), who represented the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja.
Akinyemi Adegbola, Head of the UN Electoral Needs Assessment Mission, led the UN delegation.
In his remarks, Kamau acknowledged the continued partnership between the United Nations and the National Police Service in promoting democratic processes in Kenya.
He commended the UN for its ongoing support in fostering peaceful and secure elections.
“The United Nations has been a crucial partner in strengthening our democratic institutions and promoting credible, peaceful, and inclusive elections,” Kamau said.
He noted that the NPS has intensified its preparedness efforts through specialised officer training, strategic deployment planning, inter-agency coordination, and community engagement programmes designed to build public confidence and trust in the electoral process.
Kamau reaffirmed that the Service remains steadfast in upholding human rights, maintaining neutrality, and demonstrating professionalism during election operations.
He emphasised that these principles are essential in ensuring that citizens can freely exercise their democratic rights without fear or intimidation.
“The National Police Service is committed to providing a secure environment that allows every Kenyan to participate in the electoral process without interference or fear,” he added.

Highlighting the importance of cooperation, Kamau stressed that effective collaboration between state and non-state actors is vital for resource mobilisation and capacity building ahead of the elections.
He also underscored the Service’s ongoing engagement with oversight bodies such as the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to strengthen accountability and transparency.
“Stakeholder collaboration remains key to ensuring synergy, efficiency, and effectiveness in securing the electoral process,” he noted.

The NPS reaffirmed its commitment to supporting free, fair, and peaceful elections during the forthcoming General Election, as well as the by-elections set to take place next month in various regions across the country.
Among those present from the UN were the Deputy UNDP Representative to Kenya, Madelena Monoja; Sare Knoope, Electoral Assistance Specialist; Shewit Desta, from the Office of the Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa; Jane Serwanga, Programme Manager – Elections, UNDP; and Prisca Kamungi, Peace and Development Officer, UN Resident Coordinator’s Office.
The Director of Reforms was accompanied by senior officers, including Tom Odero, AIG (KPS); Samson Kiptum, CP (DCI); and Bruce Nyonje, CP (APS), among others.
