Deaths of high-profile figures captured headlines at the same time throwing the country into sombre mood.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga
Raila Odinga died on October 15, 2025.
He was the son of the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
He served as the Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013.
Raila also served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Lang’ata constituency from 1992 to 2013.
Raila’s death brought the country at standstill as seven days was imposed by the government of Kenya to mourn him.
He was remembered both locally and internationally as the man who stood to fight for democracy, peace and political stability.
His status granted him state funeral after his demise.
Raila Odinga will be remembered as the “father of democracy.”
Kyalo Mbobu
He was a prominent lawyer.
Mathew Kyalo Mbobu was shot dead by motorists on September 9, 2025 on how way back home.
According to investigation report, two assailants on motorcycles trailed Mbobu’s vehicle as he drove through the Lang’ata-Karen corridor.
Assassins opened fire at close range and fleed the scene.
He served as ormer Chairperson of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) and authored The Law and Practice of Evidence in Kenya, was widely respected in the legal community.
Charles Ong’ondo Were
He was the Kasipul’s Member of Parliament (MP).
Were was fatally shot at a traffic light in Nairobi on April 30, 2025.
He was well known for his vocal advocacy for his constituents and his work in Parliament.
After his death, several people were arrested as investigations underway.

Former IEBC Chair Wafula Chebukati
Wafula Chebukati served as the Chairperson of the Independent Electrol and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
On February 20, 2025, he passed on after battling brain cancer.
The role he played during the Kenya’s electoral process in 2022 general elections reflects his contribution to democratic governance.
Moses Malulu Injendi
Injendi served as Malava’s Member of Parliament before his demise.
He died on February 17, 2025 after short illness.
His constituents and colleagues were left grieving as they reflect his commitment in community development and integrity service.
Phoebe Asiyo
She was former lawmaker and an advocate who championed for women’s rights.
Asiyo passed away in 2025.
She gained national icon due to his relentless efforts in advancing gender equality, education and civic education.
Media Personality Leonard Mbotela
His live commentary during football matches and national events made him one of the most remembered figure in Kenya broadcasting industry.
Mbotela’s career began in 1964 when he joined Voice of Kenya (now KBC).
He was interred at Lang’ata Cemetery on February 19.

Baringo Senator William Cheltumo
Senate Speaker Amason Kingi announced his death on February 16.
William died while receiving treatment at Nairobi Hospital.
He was elected to the Senate in the 2022 General Election, representing the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.
Additionally, he served as Baringo North MP from 2008 to 2022.
