How You Can Help Your Poor and Unemployed Friends Repay Their HELB Loan
Share
Kenyans are now able to directly support friends, relatives, and other HELB borrowers by making loan repayments on their behalf through a mobile USSD platform.
The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) USSD code *642# service allows not only personal repayments but also third-party payments.
This enables one person to contribute toward another borrower’s loan balance.

Beyond direct repayments, Kenyans can also assist unemployed graduates in managing their accounts by helping them submit unemployment declarations.
The board regulations require unemployed borrowers to formally declare their status through the portal under the “Self-Serve” section.

This helps prevent accounts from automatically defaulting and accumulating penalties, making repayment more manageable once the borrower secures employment.
However, in cases where borrowers have already defaulted, HELB may require an enforcement or penalty fee to regularize their accounts.
The process may involve clearing outstanding charges to restore normal repayment status.
