Inside the Final Hours of Kenya Airways Pilot Kelvin Wachira as Murder Probe Begins

Questions continue to surround the death of a Kenya Airways pilot, Kelvin Wachira, after detectives reclassified the case as murder following the results of a postmortem examination.

According to police, Kelvin was found unconscious near the entrance of Nairobi West Prison along Langata Road on July 19 before being rushed to Mbagathi Hospital, where he died the following day despite receiving treatment.

He succumbed to his injuries the following day while undergoing treatment.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Kelvin Wachira had visited the Nairobi West Prison officers’ mess at around 3 p.m. on July 19 to meet friends for drinks, during which a confrontation broke out between the pilot and several people at the venue.

Police said a waiter later escorted Kelvin Wachira to his white Mercedes-Benz, which remained parked inside the prison compound.

However, detectives believe the pilot subsequently left the vehicle under circumstances that are still unclear before he was found unconscious outside the prison entrance by an officer attached to Prison Headquarters who was heading home.

Thereafter, Kelvin Wachira was immediately taken to Mbagathi Hospital but succumbed to his injuries the following day.

His body was later moved to the Kenyatta University Funeral Home for a postmortem examination.

However, the pathologist advised the family to seek police intervention after observing suspicious injuries.

According to police, the postmortem was conducted on July 22 in the presence of police officers and established that Wachira had suffered a head injury consistent with blunt force trauma.

Meanwhile, Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Lang’ata have taken over the case and are interviewing witnesses, reviewing security camera footage and piecing together the pilot’s final movements in an effort to determine how he sustained the fatal injuries.

Man Dies After Jumping From Top of a Billboard in Nairobi

Elsewhere, a man believed to have been attempting to vandalise solar lighting equipment on a billboard died after falling about 35 metres from the top of the structure along Lusaka Road near Nyayo Roundabout in Nairobi.

According to police, members of the public alerted officers from Industrial Area Police Station after spotting the man on top of the billboard. Witnesses told police he had been on the structure since about 1:30 am and appeared to be tampering with the equipment.

As a result, officers responded to the scene and attempted to persuade him to climb down, but he did not comply, forcing them to seek assistance from the Nairobi County Fire Brigade to carry out a rescue operation.

However, at about 6:30 am, before emergency responders arrived, the man reportedly jumped from the top of the billboard and died after hitting the ground.

Nairobi police commander Issa Mohamud stated that a search operation led to the recovery of a bag containing climbing ropes, assorted tools and solar lighting components.

The man’s identity had not been established by the time the report was filed, but the body was moved to the City Mortuary for preservation as investigations continue.
