FACT CHECK: Was Gladys Wanga’s Chopper Blocked from Landing in Narok

Claims that ODM National Chairperson Gladys Wanga’s chopper was blocked from landing in Narok have been contradicted by her account of the visit and independent verification by Hivileo.

Wanga travelled to Narok South on Friday, September 25, as ODM stepped up its mobilisation activities in the Maa region.

The party had announced a three-day mobilisation tour of Kajiado and Narok, with Wanga leading the delegation.

Later, a video emerged showing a chopper attempting to land while people on the ground carried rungus and wore ODM caps. Some social media users claimed that the people were blocking Wanga’s chopper from landing.

However, Hivileo has established that Wanga was warmly welcomed during the party’s grassroots mobilisation tour in Narok, with no evidence found to support claims that her chopper was blocked from landing.

This is based on the live events from Narok South and Wanga’s posts on social media, which gave a completely different picture.

Rather than reporting a disruption, Wanga posted about her time in Majimoto/Naroosura, describing the reception as warm hospitality and saying residents had declared their support for the party in Narok South.

“Thank you Narok South for your warm hospitality today,” Wanga said in a post after the visit. She added: “A declaration from the Mara! The residents of Narok South have spoken.”

Wanga takes broad-based government message to Narok

During the rally, Wanga turned to the political contest ahead, defending ODM’s continued place in the broad-based government while warning that the current political battle was far from over.

“You know how things are going in Kenya. We were left behind by our father there within the broad-based government,” she said, before pointing to efforts by other political groups to organise against the Ruto administration.

Wanga said ODM had previously worked with the same political actors now positioning themselves differently, arguing that the party would not be caught off guard as the next political contest takes shape.

She then framed the political contest in football terms, telling supporters that the game is at 90+4 in extra time.

“This game is still at 90+4 in extra time, it is only beginning now, Honourable William Ruto, together with Oburu Odinga.” she said.

Wanga also defended the record of the broad-based government, pointing to roads, markets and other development projects launched by President William Ruto across different parts of the country.

“This is the government that has ensured every Kenyan has a place in government,” she said, arguing that development projects were being implemented beyond one region.

ODM chairperson targets rival parties

Wanga also used the Narok platform to defend ODM’s national reach, drawing a distinction between the party and other political formations.

“As the chairman of the ODM party, I thank them because ODM and UDA are the only national parties,” she said.

She described other parties, including DCP and Wiper, as village-based parties.

Her visit came as ODM intensified its presence in the Maa region following internal concerns over the party’s support in Kajiado and Narok.

The party’s three-day mobilisation drive was aimed at strengthening its grassroots structures amid threats of defections and political competition in the region.

Wanga had also earlier said ODM had regained stability in Narok after a period of uncertainty following Raila Odinga’s death.
