Wanjiru Returns With 2027 Nairobi Governor Bid, Takes Aim at Sakaja

Former Starehe MP and assistant minister Bishop Margaret Wanjiru has returned to the Nairobi governor race, declaring her intention to challenge Governor Johnson Sakaja in the 2027 General Election.

Wanjiru announced her bid on Sunday, 6th September, at her Jesus Is Alive Ministries (JIAM) church, where she told hundreds of congregants that Nairobi needs a change in leadership after years of male governors.

“It is time Nairobi got better leadership than what is there now,” Wanjiru said, arguing that the capital is ready for its first female governor.

The former legislator, who served as Starehe MP and roads assistant minister during the Mwai Kibaki administration, said her experience in public office gives her the credentials to lead Nairobi.

She also launched a direct attack on Sakaja, accusing the governor of failing to honor an agreement reached before she withdrew from the 2022 Nairobi governor race to support his bid.

“Sakaja has failed miserably,” Wanjiru said, claiming the governor had not been keen to honor the pact they made.

10-point agenda focused on transforming Nairobi

Wanjiru has now placed her campaign on a 10-point agenda focused on transforming Nairobi.

Her priorities include a clean and green city, job creation, investment attraction and protection, better healthcare, improved infrastructure, and protection of businesses.

She also plans to fight corruption, improve education, expand access to reliable water, and promote respect for all tribes and religions living in Nairobi.

Wanjiru said she would pursue stronger international partnerships and attract more investors, arguing that Nairobi has not fully exploited its position as a regional economic hub.

Wanjiru’s Political Stance

The bishop also positioned herself within the United Alternative Opposition, saying she would support the outfit’s presidential candidate while seeking Nairobi residents’ backing for the governor’s seat.

She further criticized President William Ruto’s administration, saying it had failed to deliver on commitments made ahead of the 2022 elections.

Wanjiru recently resigned from the Nairobi River restoration committee, where she had served under Ruto’s administration.

Her Kenya Moja Movement Party (K1) is also seeking to attract politicians pursuing elective positions in Nairobi and beyond, including members associated with Edwin Sifuna and the Linda Mwananchi outfit.
