TSC Sets the Record Straight on Alleged Recruitment and Promotion Fees

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has dismissed claims that it is demanding that teachers contribute cash for the conducting of the teacher recruitment and promotion interviews, terming them fake.

In a fake post alert issued on September 8, the commissioner said there are several posts on social media platforms claiming that schools must cough up money for the exercise to be carried out.

“Good afternoon, colleagues. You are kindly requested to ask our members to contribute for promotional and recruitment interview support as follows: 1. Schools with JSS – Ksh.1000 2. Without JSS – Ksh.500… Let them make the contribution to regional chairs by Friday, 11th September 2026 so as to facilitate the smooth running of the exercise.” The fake alert read.

The Commission and the board disowned the message, stamping it “FAKE” and dismissing claims stating that it is fake.

“The Commission wishes to clarify that no fees are levied for any services provided to teachers. Recruitment and promotion remain core functions of TSC and are conducted in a transparent and accountable manner. These services are fully funded by TSC. County Directors are provided with adequate resources to undertake the exercise,” TSC stated.

The Commission further warned school administrators against falling for the scheme.

“All Heads of public basic education institutions are hereby warned on their participation or indulgence in such allegedly unlawful interactions.”

TSC cautioned teachers and the public to only use official Commission communication platforms for any recruitment and promotion updates.

TSC Functions and Mandate

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is a constitutional commission of Kenya that is established under Article 237 of the Constitution of Kenya for the management of the teaching service.

The board is in charge of registering trained teachers, recruiting and employing teachers, posting teachers to public schools, promoting and transferring teachers, and exercising disciplinary control over teachers.

Teacher Employment Management

TSC also manages service terms and conditions of teachers within public learning institutions and harmonizes important procedures related to teachers’ employment.

The Commission routinely mediates official notices, notices for recruitment, transfers, and other employment issues on the various channels dedicated to official communication between teachers and the Commission.
