Murango Demands Apology, Retraction From Citizen Over Claims He Gave Women Panties

Kirinyaga Senator James Kamau Murango has demanded a retraction and public apology from Citizen TV over a report linking him to the distribution of women’s underwear branded with his name and references to the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF).

“Our client did not print, procure, buy, supply or distribute the underwear shown in the video.” The letter said.

The demand was contained in a letter dated September 24, 2026, from Sakimpa & Partners Advocates and addressed to Royal Media Services, Citizen Digital and Citizen Television.

Murango’s lawyers said Citizen’s report created the impression that Murango had procured or distributed the underwear as part of his campaign for the Kirinyaga governor’s seat.

The dispute follows videos that circulated in Kirinyaga showing women displaying underwear bearing the words “NGAAF” and “Gov Kamau Murango 2027.”

The videos prompted reactions from residents, with reports at the time linking the items to Murango’s gubernatorial campaign.

Murango has since disputed the connection, saying the appearance of his name on the items does not establish that he was behind them.

Murango challenges Citizen report

His lawyers singled out Citizen Digital’s caption, which described the incident as women receiving free underwear promoting the senator’s gubernatorial bid.

They argued that the report went beyond showing the disputed items and airing residents’ reactions by portraying Murango as the person who had bought, commissioned, or distributed them.

“The mere appearance of his name and the NGAAF label on an item is no proof that he caused it to be made or distributed,” the lawyers stated.

The letter also disputes any suggestion that Murango used or misused NGAAF funds.

His lawyers said NGAAF falls outside his mandate as a senator and that he has no role in administering its funds or procuring items under its name.

They further faulted Citizen for failing to seek Murango’s response before publishing the report. The lawyers said Murango would have denied any involvement and clarified his position had the media outlet approached him.

Lawyers give Citizen 24 hours

Murango’s legal team has demanded that Citizen remove the report, clips and related posts from its digital platforms and stop rebroadcasting or republishing the allegations.

Lawyers are also seeking a correction and public apology with prominence comparable to the original report, alongside an opportunity for Murango to respond on air and on the digital platforms where the story appeared.

They have further demanded that Citizen admit liability and engage them overcompensation for what they describe as damage to Murang’o’s character, dignity and standing as an elected leader.

The letter gives Royal Media Services 24 hours from receipt to comply with the demands.

Failure to do so, the lawyers warned, would see Murango pursue the matter before the Media Complaints Commission and potentially institute civil proceedings seeking damages, interest and costs.
