Activist Muteti Mulinge Found Dumped After Days of Disappearance

Activist Mulinge Muteti has been found after going missing during a Nairobi protest calling for the release of Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye, with human rights activist Hussein Khalid saying he was dumped in the Lukenya area at around 3am on Friday, September 25.

Khalid announced the development in a post on X on Friday morning, saying Muteti managed to walk a long distance before reaching a Shell petrol station, where he obtained help to contact his brother.

“Comrade Muteti Mulinge has been found. He was dumped last night around 3am in the Lukenya area. He had to walk for a long distance to a shell petrol station where he got a good samaritan who helped him with a phone to call his brother,” he said.

Khalid further said Muteti was in a disoriented, weak and injured state after the ordeal and was receiving treatment at Sanel Hospital in the Mlolongo area.

“He is disoriented, weak and injured. He is currently receiving treatment at Sanel Hospital in Mlolongo area. Family, friends and comrades are proceeding there,” he added.

Following the report, family members, friends and fellow activists proceeded to the hospital as Muteti received medical attention.

Mulinge Muteti Went Missing During Kizza Besigye Protest

Muteti disappeared on Monday, September 21, during a Nairobi demonstration calling for the release of Uganda Opposition leader Kizza Besigye.

Earlier that day, Muteti had left fellow activists at the protest to visit a cybercafé along Aga Khan Walk and print a petition that they planned to present to police and other government offices.

He did not return to the group, and his phone later became unreachable.

According to reports from people who were with him, Muteti sent a message at 11:57am saying he had been arrested.

His family subsequently reported his disappearance as relatives and human rights organisations searched for him at several police stations.

Court Sought Answers Over His Whereabouts

Meanwhile, the disappearance prompted legal action after activist Francis Awino filed an urgent application at the Milimani Law Courts seeking orders compelling Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and DCI Director Mohammed Amin to account for Muteti’s whereabouts.

The application sought records relating to any alleged arrest, detention, transfer or release and asked authorities to produce Muteti before court if he was in custody.

However, a charge sheet dated September 22 involving other activists arrested during the protests did not list Muteti, according to the court application.

A disappearance report was subsequently recorded at Central Police Station on September 23.

The reported discovery on Friday now ends several days of uncertainty over Muteti’s whereabouts, although the circumstances surrounding how he came to be in Lukenya remain unclear.
