OPINION: Does James Orengo’s Defiance Hold the Key to Nyanza’s Political Future?

For decades, James Aggrey Bob Orengo has dominated national headlines and daily newspapers, cementing his legacy as a titan of Kenyan politics.

His illustrious career spans from serving as one of the longest-serving Members of Parliament for Ugenya Constituency to making history as the pioneer Senator for Siaya County following the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution and ultimately rising to his current station as the second Governor of Siaya County.

In addition to being an experienced politician, James Orengo is an experienced legal giant.

He is a Senior Counsel and Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. Orengo has been in the limelight in several monumental legal cases, especially in high-stakes presidential election petitions.

Orengo’s legal career and political journey would not be complete without mention of the late Right Honorable Raila Amolo Odinga.

For many years, he has been serving as lead counsel for his friend in consecutive, tough presidential election petitions following the general elections of 2013, 2017, and 2022.

In addition, Orengo was part of the legal team responsible for the controversial Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) petition, where he passionately argued the case at the Supreme Court.

In the end, the court declared the initiative unconstitutional in early 2022.

Nyanza’s Political Vacuum Post-Odinga

Before assuming governorship in Siaya County, Orengo was one of the members of the famous “Young Turks” who fought hard to bring back multi-party democracy after the oppressive one-party regime of KANU in the early 1990s.

For decades, the political future and interests of the Nyanza region have been safely guarded by the unyielding leadership of Raila Odinga, who has been recognized as the region’s political patriarch and godfather.

However, after his death in October 2025, there has been a big political vacuum in the region and in the country in general.

This vacuum has led to the formation of different political alliances and the splitting of the Nyanza region into two competing ideological factions.

The first faction, composed of people satisfied with the status quo, has decided to support President William Ruto’s 2027 re-election bid.

This alliance is based on the broad-based government agreement reached between President Ruto and the late Raila Odinga in mid-2024, aimed at stabilizing the country after intense anti-government protests.

On the other hand, a strong dissent group, including Governor Orengo, has strongly opposed the president’s re-election bid, arguing that the alliance weakens the opposition’s oversight role.

Orengo’s Defiance vs Government Agreement

James Orengo has been one of the most vocal critics of President William Ruto’s administration.

He routinely accuses the regime of transforming Kenya into a “police state” and weaponizing security apparatuses to settle political scores.

Critics view Siaya Governor James Orengo as a politician whose relevance has waned, characterizing his opposition to the state as mere theatrics designed to keep him in the political spotlight.

His persistent campaigns to depopularize President William Ruto directly conflict with the broad-based government agreement signed in March 2025 by his long-term ally, the late Raila Odinga.

Debate Over Orengo’s Political Resistance

This friction has left many residents of the Nyanza region questioning whether Orengo’s defiance serves their best interests, or if it will simply trap the region in its historical, decades-long posture of rigid state opposition.

Conversely, his supporters and ideological allies defend his stance as a principled fight for justice.

They argue that his resistance protects the ideological identity of the ODM party and ensures the national government remains accountable, proving that his time on the political stage is far from over.
