Ruto Sends Message to UN as Haiti Mission Nears Expiration

President William Ruto has asked the United Nations Security Council to ensure a smooth transition after the completion of the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission in Haiti.

Ruto had discussions with several leaders on the sidelines of the Second Africa-CARICOM Summit which is currently ongoing in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

In a statement after meeting Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, Ruto urged the UN Security Council to provide clear guidelines as the Mission nears expiration.

“The mandate of the MSS Mission is nearing expiration. We have underscored the urgency of the United Nations Security Council providing clear guidance for a responsible and timely transition,” Ruto said.

Ruto also engaged Bahamas Prime Minister Philip Edward Davis on the sidelines of the second Africa-CARICOM Summit, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The two leaders discussed the situation in Haiti stating that the countries must from the achievements of the MSS Mission.

“We noted the implications of insecurity on neighboring countries and the region and underscored the need to build on the achievements of the Multi-National Security Support Mission. Consequently, we urged for urgent consideration and adoption of a resolution that anchors international efforts in Haiti,” Ruto said.

Ruto Proposes Strengthening of Africa-CARICOM

The Kenyan President also attended the second Africa-CARICOM Summit, AU office.

He stated that the united call by Africa and the Caribbean for reparatory justice is a decisive step in restoring dignity, honour resilience, and correcting the injustices of history.

He proposed strengthening the Africa-CARICOM Reparations Working Group by mobilizing greater support and resources to drive the vision forward.

“We further call for the United Nations to recognize reparatory justice, take action to confront the crushing weight of unfair debt, and a commitment to turn every pledge into real and lasting change for present and future generations,” he added.
Haiti Transitional Presidential Council

Besides, Ruto also held a bilateral meeting with Edgar Leblanc, member of the Transitional Presidential Council of the Republic of Haiti, who is leading the Haitian delegation to the second Africa-CARICOM Summit in Addis Ababa.

He mentioned that Leblanc conveyed Haiti’s gratitude for the professionalism and dedication demonstrated by Kenyan troops.

“Noting the ongoing discussions in the region and the UN Security Council, we called for a successor UN Security Council Resolution that secures sustainable support for Haiti’s security efforts,” Ruto added.

Role of Kenyan Troops in Haiti

Grenada Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell also thanked Ruto for the impact of Kenyans troops in Haiti.
Mitchell said Kenyan officers have been critical in the fight against gangs in Haiti since they were deployed tp the Carribean country.

“On the situation in Haiti, the prime minister thanked our troops for demonstrable solidarity, support, and professionalism since deployment. We underscored the crucial role played by Kenyan and other troops since their deployment, pointing out that resolving the Haiti crisis is mission possible,” Ruto said.

The two leaders also agreed to strengthen their bilateral relations and directed that a technical team be set up to discuss cooperation in fintech, climate action, tourism, energy, particularly geothermal, and agriculture.
