Kenya Railways has unveiled the fare structure for the newly launched Mombasa Commuter Rail Service, offering passengers a smooth and affordable travel option across the coastal city.
The fare has been set at Ksh. 50, with services designed to ensure accurate timings and seamless connectivity between Mombasa Terminus, Miritini, and the CBD.
“Beat the traffic and enjoy a smooth ride across Mombasa with the Mombasa Commuter Rail Service,” Kenya Railways announced, emphasizing the service’s convenience and efficiency.
President William Ruto officially commissioned the service at the new Mombasa Railway Station before joining passengers on the inaugural ride from Mombasa to the New Miritini Station.
In his remarks, the President highlighted the importance of the project within the broader Kenya Railways Master Plan, which seeks to modernize the country’s railway network.
“What we are launching today is therefore a strategic piece of a much larger national network designed to connect cities, ports, markets, and communities,” he said.
The plan also outlines expansions in Nairobi and Mombasa commuter services, upgrades to the metre-gauge railway, and integration with the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
Local Leaders Applaud Project
Mombasa Governor Abdi Nasir praised the initiative, noting that the service would significantly improve mobility within the city and enhance convenience for residents and visitors alike.
He commended Kenya Railways for prioritizing solutions to ease traffic congestion in the coastal city.
On his part, Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) Davis Chirchir underscored the commuter service’s role in improving accessibility and affordability.
“The Mombasa Commuter Rail Service, which will offer a first and last mile connection for rail users into and out of Mombasa, is a sign of a shared commitment by the National Government to provide efficient, affordable, safe, and reliable transport solutions for the coast region,” he said.
Reliable and Affordable Travel
The Mombasa Commuter Rail Service is expected to decongest road traffic while offering passengers reliable and pocket-friendly transport.
With tickets priced at Ksh. 50, the service aims to become a preferred option for daily commuters, particularly those traveling between Mombasay city center, Miritini, and the SGR Terminus.
