Top Politician Resigns from Gideon Moi’s Party

The Kenya African National Union (KANU), one of the country’s oldest political parties led by Gideon Moi, has suffered a major blow following the resignation of its long-serving Secretary of Political Affairs, Fredrick T. Okango.

In a letter dated 19th September 2025 and addressed to KANU Secretary General George Gewa Wainaina, Okango tendered his resignation both from his role and from membership of the party.

The letter was officially received by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties on 23rd September 2025.

“I hereby resign, with immediate effect, from the position of Secretary of Political Affairs and from membership of KANU, in line with the Political Parties Act, 2011, and the KANU Constitution,” Okango stated in the letter.

Reasons for His Exit

Okango explained that his decision was motivated by personal political growth and the evolving dynamics of Kenya’s political landscape.

He emphasized that Kenya stands at a crossroads that requires bold decisions, fresh leadership, and transformative renewal.

“This step reflects both my personal political growth and the shifting realities of our nation’s politics. Kenya is at a crossroads that calls for bold choices, fresh leadership, and transformative renewal. Guided by this conviction, I will, in due course, engage Kenyans on the next phase of my political journey,” he wrote.

Gratitude to KANU

The former party official expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in KANU, acknowledging the party’s role in shaping the country’s democratic path.

“I remain grateful for the opportunity to have served and contributed to KANU’s vision, and I wish the party well as it continues its role in Kenya’s democratic journey,” he noted.

Implications for the Party

Okango has been one of the most visible faces of KANU in recent years, frequently articulating the party’s position on national issues.

His departure is likely to trigger speculation about his next political move and further weaken the party, which has been struggling to retain relevance in Kenya’s fast-changing political scene.

KANU’s Struggles and Future Outlook

KANU, once the dominant political powerhouse under founding President Jomo Kenyatta and later President Daniel arap Moi, has in recent decades faced declining influence, despite attempts at revival under the leadership of Gideon Moi.

The resignation of a senior figure such as Okango highlights the ongoing internal challenges and the growing search for alternative political pathways among party leaders.

Okango’s next steps will be closely watched, as his statement suggests he is preparing to launch or join a new political formation.

His call for “fresh leadership and transformative renewal” could signal alignment with other emerging political forces ahead of the next electoral cycle.

As Kenya heads into a politically charged season, Okango’s resignation underscores the fluidity of party loyalty and the ongoing realignment within the country’s political space.
