The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested 17 year old Ibrahim Haidar Yusuf, one of the individuals shown in the attached photo who was wanted in connection with an incident involving the desecration of the Kenya’s national flag has been arrested.
The incident took place on 20/09/ 2025 at Nyayo Stadium during a football match between Mogadishu City Club and Police FC where two individuals were captured on camera disrespecting the national flag—an act that is both unlawful and deeply offensive to the values we uphold as a nation.
Section 2B of The National Flag Emblem & Names Act, Cap 99 states that; Any person who shows disrespect, in speech, manner or writing, to or with reference to the National Anthem, or to any specified emblem, specified likeness or specified name, or any representation thereof, shall be guilty of an offence.
Efforts to arrest the remaining individual who is believed to be within the country are in place.
Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a strong caution to individuals disrespecting national symbols, stressing that such actions are criminal.
He noted that Kenya’s laws are clear on the matter.
“The National Flag, Emblems and Names Act is there to regulate the use of the country’s national symbols, including the national flag, emblems, names, words, and likenesses,” the CS explained.
He emphasized that the legislation provides guidance on the proper use of these symbols of identity and unity, urging authorities to act firmly against violators.
“Many people don’t know that there is the National Flag, Emblems and Names Act. I urge the Inspector General of Police to ensure the law takes its course,” he said.
Incident That Sparked Outrage
Murkomen’s remarks came while addressing the public in Wajir during the 45th Jukwaa La Usalama tour.
His statement followed public uproar after disturbing clips spread widely online.
The videos showed rowdy supporters mishandling the Kenyan flag by stomping on it and kicking it around in an unruly manner.
The act took place during a CAF Champions League encounter last Saturday, where Kenya Police FC secured a 3-1 win over Mogadishu City FC.
National Pride Not to Be Mocked
The Cabinet Secretary did not mince words, warning that such contempt for symbols that embody Kenya’s sovereignty would not be tolerated.
“When you joke with our symbols of national unity and pride, you have overstayed your welcome,” he declared.
Police Response
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja reinforced the government’s position, confirming that security agencies had launched investigations into the matter.
“That matter is extremely serious and I can confirm that the matter is under control,” IG Kanja stated.
The government has vowed to take decisive action to protect the dignity of the national flag and other emblems representing unity and patriotism.
