The National Identification (ID) Card is proof that one is a Kenyan citizen.

ID is use for very important services and losing it might bring all these to a stop.

Hivileo.co.ke has detailed a step-by-step process you can follow to replace your lost ID.

Immediately after an individual has lost his national ID card, he is required to report the matter to the nearest police station.

This is to ensure the individual is safe incase his/her ID is used in fraud  or theft.

File out a Loss Report 

Provide relevant information in details about the circumstances under which you lost the ID card.

This can include information like location, time and other documents lost alongside the ID should there be any.

This information should be accurate.

Obtain a Police Abstract

Police will issue an abstract after the loss report has been filed.

This document is an official record showing that your ID card is lost and replacement is required.

This document is required during submission of online application for ID card replacement.

Applying for a Replacement ID Card via eCitizen

The government of Kenya has eased and streamlined the process of ID card replacement through the eCitizen platform  allowing individuals fill the credentials online.

Create or log in eCitizen Account

If you don’t have an eCitizen account you will be required to create one by visiting:

eCitizen Portal: Go to www.ecitizen.go.ke.

Select the Service

After logging into your eCitizen account, navigate to the Civil Registration Department and select “ID Card” service and choose the option of replacing a lost ID card.

Complete the Application Form

Personal Information:

Enter your full name, ID number (if available), date of birth, and other relevant details.

Police Abstract Number

Individual is required to fill in the police abstract number received after reporting the loss of the ID card at the police station.

Individual may be required to provide extra information.

Pay the Processing Fee

Currently, fee for replacing lost ID card is Ksh500 which must be paid to complete application.

Money can be paid through mobile money, debit and credit cards, bank transfers.

After making the payment, individual will receive a payment receipt which should be kept as it may be required to proof you made payment.

Submit the Application

Upon completion of application and payment, click the “submit” button to send your application for processing.

Individual will receive a confirmation email and is eligible to track status of application through eCitizen.

Processing Time for ID Replacement

Generally, the lost ID cards takes around 4 to 6 weeks to be ready but in some cases it may take longer.

Collecting Your New ID Card

Once the replacement ID card is ready, the owner will be notified through SMS or email.

He/she will be required to visit designated collection point.
