Kisumu County Senator Prof. Tom Ojienda has sounded the alarm on the floor of the Senate over the worsening state of public sanitation facilities across the county, particularly in high-traffic areas such as markets, bus parks, and beaches along Lake Victoria.
He noted that despite regular budgetary allocations by the county government, many public toilets in key locations, including Kibuye Market, Jubilee Market, Kisumu Bus Park, and Lwang’ni Beach, remain in a state of disrepair.
“These facilities lack running water, proper lighting, and security, posing serious health risks and undermining the dignity of residents, traders, and visitors alike,” he told the House.
Sen. Ojienda urged the Senate Standing Committee on Health to investigate and provide a comprehensive inventory of all public sanitation facilities in Kisumu, detailing their physical condition and operational status.
He also demanded disclosure of the county government’s total allocations and actual expenditure on maintenance and upgrades over the past three financial years.
He further called for urgent interventions to ensure compliance with health and safety standards, especially in view of the growing tourism activities around Lake Victoria.
