Health Cabinet Secretary (CS) Aden Duale on September 27 2025 HAS announced a new national strategy to stop more maternal deaths, saying the government is already taking action in response to the quick rising concerns about the country’s broken maternal healthcare system.

In a statement, Duale said no mother who visits any of our health care centres not as a patient but healthy and happy should die.

“Already introducing a key strategy that is dubbed ‘No Woman Should Die While Giving Life’ through deliberate actions to improved access to skilled birth attendants, quality healthcare, and better healthcare systems.”

Duale explained that the Health Ministry is determined to strengthening healthcare financing and using data to plan for like over 20 counties needs.

“We shall be improving healthcare financing, and using data to plan for county-specific needs. Over 20 counties are on the radar on high maternal mortality rates. We are already acting as a ministry,” he stated.

The Cabinet Secretary urged expectant mothers to seek medical attention early and even throughout the journey.

“We urge our women to start prenatal care early, seeing a health care provider throughout the pregnancy, and being sure to attend postpartum visits can help to prevent and treat severe pregnancy-related complications,” he said.

These remarks came after Citizen TV highlighted the crisis in a report titled Broken Maternal Healthcare System which linked maternal deaths to delays in emergency response, understaffed facilities, poor roads and rural infrastructures and blood shortages which leading to the deaths of many mothers, causing an impact on families and even the entire community.

Duale maintained that the ministry is moving swiftly to tackle these issues through the new strategy and coordinated county-level interventions.
