US Embassy Clarifies Visa Services Amid Govt Shutdown

Share

The United States (US) Embassy in Kenya has announced that visa and passport services will continue despite the ongoing U.S. government shutdown, even as it confirmed that regular updates on its social media platforms will be limited.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Embassy noted that its official communication channels would not be updated frequently during the funding lapse.

“Due to the lapse in appropriations, this X account will not be updated regularly until full operations resume, with the exception of urgent safety and security information,” the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi stated.

The shutdown, which took effect after U.S. lawmakers failed to agree on a budget extension, has raised concerns among visa applicants and travelers across the globe.

However, the Embassy moved to assure applicants that core services remain functional.

“Scheduled passport and visa transit services in the United States and at U.S. Embassies and Consulates overseas will continue during the lapse in appropriations as the situation permits. For information on our services and operating status, visit travel.state.gov,” the Embassy said.

Global Impact of Shutdown

The shutdown has affected several U.S. government operations, but essential services such as national security, air traffic control, and emergency consular assistance have been maintained.

For many foreign nationals, especially those seeking travel to the U.S. for education, work, or family visits, the reassurance that visa processing will continue comes as a relief.

According to analysts, prolonged shutdowns can lead to delays in processing due to reduced staffing and limited resources.

The U.S. Department of State has previously warned that services could slow down if the lapse in appropriations drags on.

Embassy Urges Patience

The Embassy has advised applicants to remain patient and use official platforms for updates.

It also emphasized that only urgent information regarding safety and security will be prioritized on its social media platforms until normal operations resume.

The U.S. government shutdown has become a recurring challenge in recent years, often arising from political disagreements over budget allocations.

While the current situation has not fully disrupted consular services, applicants are being urged to plan accordingly and check official government websites for any changes in processing timelines.

As Washington works toward a resolution, Kenyans seeking travel to the U.S. have been reminded that while applications will still be received and processed, delays cannot be ruled out if the shutdown continues.
