The National Police Service (NPS) and National Police Service Commission (NPSC) have confirmed the postponement of the police recruitment exercise that was scheduled to start from October 3, 2025.
In a statement on October 2, NPS Director of Corporate Communications, Muchiri Nyaga, said the exercise has been suspended until further notice due to Order of the Employment and Labour Relations Court.
“In accordance with the Order of the Employment and Labour Relations Court, issued on 2nd October 2025 in Petition No. E196 of 2025 (Harun Mwau v. Inspector General of Police, the National Police Service Commission & 2 Others), the police recruitment exercise scheduled to commence on 3rd October 2025 has been postponed until further notice,” reads part of the statement.
Muchiri said NPS and NPSC will pursue legal solutions to ensure the recruitment exercise can continue.
“The National Police Service, in conjunction with the National Police Service Commission, is actively pursuing appropriate legal remedies to ensure the recruitment exercise can resume at the earliest opportunity,” Muchiri said.
“As a Service, we remain committed to upholding the rule of law and complying with court orders.”
Earlier, Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen said he was aware of a court order stopping the exercise.
However, CS urged the judge to lift the ban on the police recruitment exercise as the nation demands them badly.
Murkomen said deaths of various police officers and retirements of others have led to shortage of Police officers across the country.
He said the country also needs fresh energy from new recruits to provide reliable support in the upcoming general elections.
“There are many police officers who have retired, some have passed on and we need to replace and bring energetic police officers who will be trained in time to even help us support the next election,” he stated.
He also stated that police recruitment is a critical exercise that deals with security matters across the country and should not be interfered with.
“I hope that the judge will watch my speech so that I don’t need to call her and apply reason to make sure that the process is opened very quickly to ensure that our country can recruit the police officers they need so badly,” he said.
