Former Nairobi County ICT CEC Newton Munene has been found dead at his home in Karen, Nairobi, under unclear circumstances.
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko confirmed the incident.
He was a member of Sonko’s Nairobi county executive for the Information Communication Technology (ICT) sector.
“I have received the sad news of Mr. Newton Munene’s passing with profound shock,” Sonko said.
Munene was among the three key witnesses in Mike Sonko’s corruption case, where he testified last week that officials from the previous administration had implicated Sonko in corruption allegations that eventually led to his impeachment.
“Munene’s death occurred just a week after he provided testimony as my defense witness in a case in which I have been wrongfully accused regarding Webtribe’s Jambo Pay contract,” Sonko said.
He condemned the incident and accussed the “cartels” of killing him.
“It is deeply regrettable that the cartels have retaliated by taking Munene’s life,” he said.
“I want to make it clear to the public that this act is one of cowardice and must be condemned in the strongest terms possible.”

Sonko asked his accusers to face him in court if they had evidence linking him to corruption.
He maintained that the threats will not stop him from seeking justice.
Furthermore, Sonko said he has reliable information indicating that some former CECMs (ministers) who served under his leadership and have volunteered to be his defence witnesses are being threatened and intimidated to stop coming to court to testify.

“If my accusers possess any evidence linking me to acts of corruption, they should confront me in a court of law. In the meantime, I refuse to bow to threats, intimidation and coarsion while innocent individuals are murdered for exercising their constitutional right to defend me,” he said.
Munene’s body has been moved to Lee Funeral Home.
