The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has expressed deep concern over the growing cases of violence and mistreatment directed towards members of the National Police Service (NPS) by some members of the public.
In a statement dated October 13, 2025, and signed by IPOA Chairperson Ahmed Issack Hassan, the authority condemned the recent rise in attacks against law enforcement officers, citing it as a dangerous trend that threatens public safety and undermines the rule of law.
The oversight body particularly referenced a series of violent incidents that have recently occurred, including those at the State House, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), and Kiganjo Police Station in Gatundu, Kiambu County.
According to IPOA, police officers were subjected to physical assaults, destruction of property, and in some cases, loss of life.
One of the most alarming events, the Authority said, took place at the Kiganjo Police Station, where a section of the facility was torched, resulting in the destruction of key police infrastructure and significantly disrupting law enforcement operations in the region.
“These acts undermine public safety efforts and threaten the rule of law,” IPOA stated, urging the public to exercise restraint and professionalism when engaging with law enforcement officers.

The Authority extended its heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased officers, describing the attacks as tragic and unacceptable.
IPOA further called upon security agencies to act swiftly in bringing to justice those responsible for the arson attack and other violent acts targeting officers.
The statement emphasized that attacking police officers constitutes lawlessness and undermines the progress made in police reforms, particularly efforts to enhance accountability and professionalism within the service.
IPOA warned that such acts risk eroding the gains achieved in promoting trust between the police and the public.

In its closing remarks, IPOA urged all members of the public to uphold the rule of law and to seek redress through legally established channels whenever aggrieved by police misconduct.
“IPOA therefore urges all members of the public to uphold the rule of law and to seek redress through legally established channels in instances of police misconduct,” the statement concluded.
The Authority reiterated its commitment to guarding public interest in policing and promoting lawful, professional engagement between citizens and law enforcement officers.
