Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) Board Chairperson, Joy Masinde, has commended local motor dealers for championing the introduction of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) into Kenya’s market.
Speaking on Monday, October 14, 2025, during a test drive of the BYD Shark 6; a PHEV pickup truck unveiled by Loxea Kenya, Masinde emphasized Kenya Power’s dedication to expanding access to electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the country.
She noted that the company remains committed to decarbonising Kenya’s power grid and promoting climate action through sustainable transport.
“At Kenya Power, we are working very hard to power a sustainable future for Kenya through electric mobility,” she said.
Masinde described her test drive in the BYD Shark 6 as thrilling, highlighting its impressive performance and modern features.
“It was a really exciting ride, very smooth, very responsive, and it goes very fast, which I like. The voice command feature is absolutely cool, and it’s unbelievably quiet,” she said.
She further noted that the pickup’s competitive price of KSh10 million makes it an attractive option for consumers, adding that its electric range of 70–80 km and an additional 600 km on hybrid mode make long-distance travel like “a trip to Mombasa no sweat.”
