President William Ruto on Tuesday, October 14, led the nation in celebrating the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) Day at Moi Barracks in Eldoret, where he paid glowing tribute to the country’s men and women in uniform for their enduring courage and service to the nation.
Addressing soldiers, commanders, and dignitaries at the ceremony, Ruto described the KDF as the “living shield of our sovereignty,” emphasizing that Kenya’s stability, progress, and destiny rest on the shoulders of its military personnel.
“It gives me great pride and honour to join you today as we mark the Kenya Defence Forces Day,” he said, noting that the occasion symbolized deep national pride and gratitude.
The event, themed “Enhancing a Soldier-Centric Approach Towards Mission Readiness for National Security and Development,” highlighted the central role of soldiers in safeguarding the country while supporting national development efforts.
Ruto stressed that true strength lies not in weapons or technology but in the courage, welfare, and readiness of Kenyan soldiers.
He paid tribute to the fallen heroes who died defending the nation, saying their memory “is forever etched in the conscience of our Republic.”
He reaffirmed the government’s pledge to care for their families, promising devoted support and recognition for their sacrifice.
At the heart of the celebrations was the acknowledgment of the daily sacrifices soldiers make, from operating in hostile terrains to spending months away from their families.
“Every soldier who dons the Kenyan uniform carries the hopes, safety, and dignity of millions of our citizens,” Ruto said.

The President outlined four key priorities aimed at enhancing KDF’s mission readiness: improving welfare, advancing training, modernizing technology, and boosting psychological resilience.
On welfare, Ruto said the government has expanded healthcare in military facilities, accelerated housing projects across bases, and strengthened family support systems.
“When a soldier knows their family is safe and supported, they serve with sharper focus and greater courage,” he noted.
He revealed that training and professional development remain top priorities, with Kenya investing in upgraded training facilities, simulation technologies, and international collaborations.
“Our troops now train alongside the best, mastering both conventional and modern forms of warfare,” he added.
Ruto further emphasized the government’s commitment to modernizing defence systems through improved mobility platforms, cyber capabilities, and intelligence operations.
“Bravery alone does not win battles; preparedness does,” he asserted.

The Head of State highlighted KDF’s crucial involvement in national development, from constructing roads and hospitals to contributing to iconic projects such as the Talanta Stadium.
“Across Kenya, the fingerprints of the KDF are everywhere,” he said, commending their role in restoring peace in the North Rift and participating in disaster response, medical outreach, and environmental conservation.
He also underscored the link between security and development, saying, “Without security, there can be no sustainable development; without development, insecurity finds fertile ground.”
The President announced plans to deepen defence cooperation with regional and international partners to enhance interoperability and intelligence sharing.
He said these partnerships “not only improve mission readiness but also elevate Kenya’s role as a responsible and respected member of the international community.”
Ruto further called on all Kenyans to stand behind the KDF.
“Every citizen has a role in safeguarding peace and stability. Communities must work with our security agencies to identify and report threats,” he urged.
Concluding his speech, President Ruto lauded the military as the pride and shield of Kenya, embodying discipline, professionalism, and patriotism.
“You are the shield and sword of our Republic. You carry the hopes of generations, the pride of our people, and the dignity of our flag,” he said.
He also extended heartfelt appreciation to the families of service members, recognizing their vital role in supporting the nation’s defenders.
“To the families of our distinguished soldiers, receive our deepest gratitude for supporting these brave warriors throughout their journey of service to the nation and to humanity,” he concluded.
