Kenya and the world were thrown into mourning on Wednesday, October 15, following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in India.

The veteran opposition leader, aged 80, passed away at Devamatha Hospital in Koothattukulam, Kerala, after collapsing during a morning walk.

According to reports, Odinga was on a routine walk at an Ayurvedic health facility in Kochi when he suffered a cardiac arrest around 8:30 a.m. Indian time.

Medical staff administered emergency cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before transferring him to Devamatha Hospital, where doctors battled to save his life. He was pronounced dead at 9:52 a.m.

Devamatha Hospital, a Christian-run institution renowned for its emergency response and gastroenterology services, became the focal point of international attention as news of Odinga’s death spread.

The hospital staff were praised for their professionalism and swift action during the incident.

A Legacy of Medical Excellence

Founded in 1975 to commemorate the centenary of Venerable Mar Thomas Kurialacherry, Devamatha Hospital stands among Kerala’s most respected multi-specialty medical centers.

What began as a 20-bed facility with two doctors and 14 nurses has since grown into a 250-bed hospital, of which 100 beds are currently functional.

The hospital’s team includes 25 senior doctors, 74 nurses, 30 nun sisters, and more than 80 paramedical staff.

It is accredited under the NABH Entry Level Program, reflecting its commitment to high-quality healthcare standards.

Devamatha specializes in a wide range of medical fields, including cardiology, gastroenterology, neurology, oncology, rheumatology, and orthopedics.

It also operates a 24-hour emergency and trauma care unit, automated laboratory, hospice center, and ambulance services.

Hospital administrators emphasize a patient-centered philosophy, combining modern medical technology with compassionate, faith-driven care.

“We believe that caring for the sick is both an art and a science,” the hospital notes in its profile, underscoring that every activity is directed toward alleviating human suffering.

Compassion, Service, and Faith

Deeply rooted in Catholic values, Devamatha Hospital’s mission is inspired by the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Its founders, including Mother Mary Francesca De Chantal, envisioned a health facility that healed both body and soul.

The hospital continues to uphold this legacy through its community outreach programs, including free medical camps, health seminars, and hospice care for the elderly and disabled.

The hospital’s hospice wing particularly reflects its compassionate philosophy, providing dignity and comfort to terminally ill patients.

This spirit of service was evident in how the facility managed Odinga’s case with discretion and empathy, offering his family support in their moment of grief.

A Nation in Mourning

Raila Odinga, affectionately known as “Baba”, was a towering figure in Kenyan politics and a lifelong champion of democracy.

He served as Kenya’s Prime Minister between 2008 and 2013 and led the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Following his death, President William Ruto declared seven days of national mourning, ordering flags to fly at half-mast across the country and at all foreign missions.

Preparations began immediately to repatriate Odinga’s body in line with his wish to be buried within 72 hours of his death.

World leaders and African statesmen paid tribute to the fallen leader, describing him as a steadfast reformist who dedicated his life to justice and good governance.

As Kenya grieves, Devamatha Hospital remains a symbol of professionalism and compassion, its name now etched in history as the place where one of Africa’s most influential statesmen drew his final breath.
