The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party National Executive Committee (NEC) has appointed an acting party leader after the demise of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
ODM Party has announced Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga as its new Acting Party Leader following a unanimous endorsement by the National Executive Committee (NEC) during a meeting held Thursday morning.
In an official statement released by the party, ODM confirmed that the NEC had “unanimously endorsed the designation of the Senator of Siaya County Dr. Oburu Oginga as the Acting Party Leader,” adding that the appointment takes effect immediately.
“The National Executive Committee (NEC) has this morning met and unanimously endorsed the designation of the Senator of Siaya County Dr. Oburu Oginga as the Acting Party Leader. This appointment takes effect immediately,” reads the statement.
The development comes in the wake of the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga, who until his death served as the long-time Party Leader of ODM and a key figure in Kenya’s political landscape.
Dr. Oburu Oginga, the elder brother of the late Raila Odinga, now assumes leadership of one of Kenya’s most influential political parties at a pivotal moment.
The decision by the NEC signals ODM’s intent to maintain continuity and stability within its ranks as the nation mourns the death of its founding leader.
Party insiders indicated that Dr. Oginga’s appointment is seen as both a symbolic and strategic move, aimed at preserving unity among members and ensuring a smooth transition ahead of possible succession deliberations within the party.
ODM officials described the endorsement as a unifying decision, emphasizing that the party’s structures remain intact and committed to advancing Raila Odinga’s political vision.
