How Youth Started a Radio Station Inside a Bedsitter Room

Share

In a remarkable show of creativity and resilience, three young Kenyans —two men and one woman —have transformed a modest bedsitter apartment into a fully functional radio station they call Bedsiter FM.

The trio, led by Gach Okolo, operates the online radio station from a small room equipped with microphones, transmitters, and minimal recording equipment.

Speaking during an interview, Gach said the idea was born from the need to find solutions in a tough job market.

“Most people say there is no work in the journalism field,” he explained.

“I thought it was wise to start my own business instead of waiting for opportunities that may never come.”

Gach added that the team does not aim for traditional radio frequencies but instead focuses on online streaming.

“I don’t have that dream of having a frequency. I want to operate online, through our website and social media platforms. Even now, we’re live-streaming,” he said confidently.

A Dream Built on Determination

His co-host, Madam Grace, detailed their broadcast routine, revealing a strict daily schedule that mirrors mainstream stations.

“When we want to go live, we set up everything here, the microphones, the voice transmitter, and then we go online,” she said.

“We buy data, connect, and begin our shows,” she added.

Grace said their daily lineup includes a morning show from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m., a mid-morning show called Kazi Ni Kazi from 10 a.m. to noon, a drive-time show from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., and a night show from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Local Voices, Global Reach

The station’s producer, Emmanuel, noted that Bedsiter FM offers a full range of programs.

“We handle local, national, and international news. I’m the one who reads the news there,” he said.

The station streams across multiple social media platforms, including Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and TikTok, proving that passion and innovation can overcome limited resources.

As Kenya’s media industry continues to evolve, Bed-Sitter FM stands as a symbol of how young journalists are rewriting the future of broadcasting, one small room at a time.
