Govt Gives Way Forward on Mashujaa Day Celebrations

The Government of Kenya has reaffirmed that the Mashujaa Day celebrations will go on as planned on October 20 2025, despite the country mourning following the death of former Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga.

This announcement was carried out by an official statement released using the Executive Office of the President, Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service, Office of Government Spokesperson on the October 18 2025.

The government in the statement, which was signed by Dr Isaac Mwaura, the government spokesperson, expressed it’s deep sorrow over the passing on of Raila Odinga, describing him as ” a great hero and a statesman whose indomitable spirit shaped our nation’s journey.”

The late Odinga is to be buried at his home in Bondo with the government extending its condolence to his family and the whole country.

Mashujaa Day to go ahead as scheduled.

Despite the gloomy mood of the country, the government Reaffirmed its commitment to uphold Mashujaa Day, which is an annual event that is held by Kenya to honor those heroes who helped to bring freedom, unity, and development to the country.

The national event will be held in Ithookwe stadium in Kitui county in full recognition of all the Kenyan heroes both the past and present.

The government stressed that the Mashujaa Day is a major celebration that forms part of the Kenyan national identity and citizens are expected to come together to honor the memory of those who made the country what it is today.

Delays in Certain Operations.

Although it reassured that the main event would still take place ,the government pointed out that some of the peripheral activities like the Energy Week and the Media Breakfast have been respectfully postponed .

This move is meant to provide room to the nation to reflect and mourn as directed by president Dr. William Samoei Ruto.

The statement clarified that even with these changes, the main celebrations will be held as scheduled and Kenyans will be able to celebrate their heroes while reflecting on the life and legacy of Raila Odinga.

Call For Unity and Reflection.

The government urged all Kenyans to turn up in large numbers to celebrate the Mashujaa day and to embrace the spirit of national unity.

The part of the statement read, “Let us come together as one people to celebrate the enduring legacy of the Rt. Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga and all our mashujaa.”

Citizens were advised to come out with their voices and stories of strength and resilience weaving a living tribute to the departed leader who motivated generations to stand tall.

The statement ended by urging Kenyans to rise in the spirit of Harambee honouring the late Raila Odinga recommitting to take the dream of a stronger united Kenya .
