President William Ruto, has vowed to work closely with the Luo community following the passing on of the late Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
In the funeral service in Bondo, Siaya county on October 19, the Head of State promised the mourners that he will maintain the unity, peace and political partnership that he had agreed upon with the late opposition leader.
In his emotional tribute , President Ruto acknowledged the great contribution made by Raila to the democracy in Kenya and the development of this country. He described Raila as a patriot whose leadership was above party and ethnicity.
According to Ruto, there was no more committed leader to the reform process in Kenya than Raila and his legacy would still be felt in the political future of Kenya in generations to come.
“To this community, I want to assure you that by God’s grace ,we are going to journey together in the footsteps and direction that our friend and brother Raila Odinga has pointed to us.
I will not betray the course upon which I have agreed with him.” Ruto said amid applause from the crowd.

The President has been perceived to have made a powerful message of reconciliation and inclusion to the region that has been historically involved with the opposition politics.
He pointed out that Raila had been instrumental in uniting the nation even outside the political field especially following their handshake deal which eased the tensions and enhanced stability in the country.
Ruto further affirmed that his government is still dedicated to promoting development and empowerment in all regions of Kenya, Nyanza included .
He said that continuing the legacy of cooperation and spirit of partnership with Raila’s supporters would honour his memory and contribute to the realisation of his vision of a united and successful country.
“As we bid farewell to a great son of Kenya,we must also commit ourselves to the values he stood for ; peace, justice, and equality.
Raila’s vision for an inclusive Kenya, is one we must all uphold,”the president added.

As the country continues to grieve over Raila Odinga, the president’s pledge in Bondo is not only regarded as an honorable act but also a historic diplomatic move to reconcile the long standing division between the state and the Luo community.
