Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga has revealed the untold story behind the distinctive marks on the face of his late brother, opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Speaking during Raila’s memorial service held at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST), Dr. Oburu shared personal details of Raila’s childhood and adult life that left visible scars on his face.

According to Dr. Oburu, the prominent mark on Raila Odinga’s forehead was the result of an accident he suffered while in Germany.

“The one on his forehead is a result of an accident he got involved in in Germany,” the senator explained, noting that the injury occurred during Raila’s years abroad, long before he became a household name in Kenyan politics.

The revelation added a human and historical dimension to Raila’s well-known resilience, tracing some of his physical scars back to his early struggles and experiences overseas.

Childhood Mishap at Ofafa Memorial Home

Dr. Oburu went on to describe how the second mark, located near Raila’s mouth, was caused by a childhood accident in Kisumu.

“The one on his mouth is a result of dangerous play on jumping from one mango tree to another at the current Ofafa Memorial Home in Kisumu,” he said.

“He fell and tore his mouth, and I had to carry him on my back to the hospital for treatment,” Oburu added.

The senator recalled how other children laughed at the young Raila for injuring himself.

“Others were laughing that Raila has injured himself and that it’s his fault,” he added.

A Testament of Resilience

The anecdotes painted a vivid picture of a daring and adventurous Raila from a young age, traits that would later define his political journey.

Dr. Oburu’s heartfelt recollections offered mourners at JOOUST a glimpse into the formative years of the man many fondly called Baba, emphasizing his courage, endurance, and indomitable spirit that carried through both personal and national battles.
