X platform remains suspended in Tanzania as the country heads to it’s general elections.
Despite the ban, government officials are the only people allowed to use X ahead of general elections.
Tanzania elections will be conducted on October 29th, 2025.
Amnesty International issued a statement saying this elections won’t be fair because key opposition figures has been barred from contesting.
On September 6, 2025, the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) announced that it had blocked access to JamiiForums and suspended its licence.
Tanzania is led by Samia Suluhu Hassan who assumed power after her predecessor died in 2021, is seeking to retain the presidency, amid criticism from political opponents and the United Nations about worsening repression.

According to TCRA, the platform breached the Electronic and Postal Communications Act, citing publication of misleading content that defamed the country’s president and undermined national unity.
JamiiForums published a statement on X stating that Tanzanian politician Humphrey Polepole known critic of the government led by Samia Suluhu Hassan published wrong publications.
Suluhu met with Zimbabwean businessman for a joint meeting but Humphrey took the advantage and made a publication concerning the meeting without verifiable facts and seeking government consent.
CPJ, however, noted that it could not be determined whether the disputed content was published by JamiiForums or its users.
The organization contacted the TCRA and government spokesperson for clarification but received no response.
In 2024, Tanzania Internet Service Providers blocked access to X platform due to political tension between the government and opposition.
Earlier, it faced criticism for abusing online content laws that demanded the shut down of social media platforms and control flow of information in the country.
Additionally, the founder of JamiiForums, Maxence Melo, was arrested and convicted for operating an unregistered website, but was acquitted in 2020.

UN expressed serious concerns due to rise of violence and repression in the country ahead of October 29 elections.
According to UN, this acts are against human rights.
They also condemned enforced disappearances of opposition figures and intimidation of journalists.
