Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo has revealed that there are suggestions to increase the number of Members of the National Assembly by 91.
Speaking on October 22, Amollo said the discussions are part of the 10-point agenda signed between President William Ruto and late Prime Minister Raila Odinga that led to the formation of the Broad-Based Government.
He stated that the implementations of the agreements are ongoing, but some areas have not been covered, including the two-thirds gender rules.
“There are areas that have been covered, but there are many more areas that have not been covered. We are lagging in terms of implementation. Some of the areas are actually difficult,t like how to deal with the two-thirds gender in terms of implementation,” he said.
Amollo said one of the suggestions is to increase the number of nominated female MPs to meet the two-thirds gender rule.
He explained that by calculations, this could mean that the numbers can be increased by 91 to meet the requirements.
“As we speak, there is a proposal that has been brought to amend the constitution, and we are actively discussing it. The question is, should we amend the constitution and increase the number of nominated women? By that calculation, we would be increasing it by about 91 to achieve it,” he said.

However, Amollo said there is a question about whether the government can finance additional MPs.
He revealed that discussions are ongoing, but it will take time to resolve the issue.
“The opposite question is, do we have the finances to sustain additional MPs? We are actively discussing it. This is a discussion that has been ongoing for the last 15 years; you can’t just resolve it immediately,” he said.
