Kiambu County to Pay Doctors One Month’s Salary to End Strike

The Council of Governors (CoG) and Health Committee held a consultative meeting regarding the ongoing doctors strike in Kiambu County.

The meeting was also attended by the Kiambu County officials and the Kenya Medical, Pharmacist and Dentist Union (KMPDU).

In a press statement issued on October 24, 2025, the meeting aimed at finding solution for the four months period of doctors strike in Kiambu County.

The strike in Kiambu commenced on May 27th, 2025, few days after KMPDU issuing a strike notice.

KMPDU issued a strike notice on April 29th, 2025.

However, it has been noted that 272 doctors out of 370 were not part of the ongoing strike.

Kiambu County highlighted the positive progress they will use to address the Union concerns by engaging 90 doctors and 200 nurses.

“It is noted that 272 doctors out of 370 were not on strike. In this regard, Kiambu County has made considerable progress in addressing the Union concerns by engaging an extra 90 doctors and 200 nurses,” read part notice

Both parties agreed about the issues inside the strike notice upon under the conciliator appointed by the Ministry of Labour except Non-remittance of Union dues and payment of salaries withheld for the period of the strike.

Resolutions Suggested From the Meeting

1. Payment of doctor’s salaries withheld for the period of the strike

Kiambu County will pay one month’s salary to the striking doctors immediately they resume to their normal duties together with October salary.

In addition, the pending 3 months salaries will be covered in the next financial year of 2026/27.

2. Non remittance of union dues

Kiambu government agreed to resume the deduction and remittance of Union dues with immediate effect.

All the outstanding Union dues will be paid as per the Return -to-Work Formula.

3. Non-victimization

The agreement stated that no employee will face any form of victimization whatsoever by the employer.

Doctors who took part in the strike will work without discrimination.

CoG urged the County governments and Union to embrace dialogue to resolve contentious issues on time to prevent service delivery in health sector from interruption.

CoG Message to Doctors on Strike

CoG also reminded doctors that their highest call is to protect, save and preserve life and therefore they should accept the steps taken by Kiambu County and KMPDU to call off the strike.

“We appeal to the doctors to always remember their highest call which is to protect and preserve life. We urge all Doctors in Kiambu County to accept the goodwill extended by the County Government and for the KMPDU to call off the strike,” read part notice.
