The Makueni County Government has terminated the employment of a nurse attached to Kee Level 3 Hospital in Kaiti Sub-County after he allegedly threatened a patient over where to buy prescribed medicine.

In a letter dated October 22, 2025, and seen by Hivileo, Kaiti Sub-County Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Philip Maiko, informed the nurse, identified only as Nicodemus, of the decision to terminate his contract with immediate effect.

“I hereby write to provide an official notification of termination of your contract as a registered nurse with Kaiti Sub-County,” reads part of the termination letter.

Dr. Maiko further stated that the nurse was required to hand over duties before leaving the facility, noting that “the termination of contract takes effect by Friday, October 24, 2025. Ensure handing over is done to the facility in charge before exit.”

Threats Over Purchase Location

According to sources within the county’s health department, the dismissal followed allegations that Nicodemus sent a threatening text message to a patient who failed to purchase drugs from a specific chemist he had directed.

The incident was reported to the sub-county medical office, prompting an internal investigation into the matter.

The review concluded that the nurse’s actions constituted gross misconduct, leading to his immediate dismissal.

“The matter was reported and reviewed internally, and the findings confirmed unethical behavior on the part of the nurse,” a county health source revealed.

County Thanks Nurse Despite Termination

Dr. Maiko expressed gratitude for the nurse’s previous service to the health facility despite the gravity of the misconduct.

“We thank you for the dedication and services you have offered to the institution before this termination,” he stated in the correspondence.

The termination letter was also copied to the Chief Officer of Health Human Resource Management and Administration, the Director of Health Planning, and the Facility in Charge at Kee Health Centre, ensuring full administrative compliance with the county’s employment policies.

The incident has sparked discussions within the Makueni health sector on the need for stricter ethical standards and oversight among healthcare workers to safeguard patient welfare and restore public trust.
