Police units are departments of security agencies in Tanzania to foster national law, manage disasters, maintain peace, and safeguard Tanzania.

All the police force units operate under the Ministry of Home Affairs, which is headed by the Inspector General of Police.

The Tanzania Police Force (TPF) is the country’s national unit that safeguards life, property, and maintains law and order of the United Republic of Tanzania.

• Traffic Police

Traffic police officers have the mandate to ensure public safety when on the roads by ensuring traffic rules and regulations are adhered to by all road users.

In addition, they are responsible for ensuring the smooth flow of traffic.

• Criminal Investigation Department (CID)

In case there is a serious crime that needs high attentiveness to bring on board every instance that might have happened at the crime scene, the CID is invited.

They are skilled in carrying out serious investigations, eg, through fingerprints and ballistic analysis.

• Field Force Unit (FFU)

The FFU department is responsible for controlling and managing crowds.

In case of protests, demonstrations, and unrest, FFU is forced to intervene to protect the properties of people from being vandalized.

They also have to protect those protesting without excessive force.

They manage crowds during official public functions in the country.

• Marine Police Unit

The marine officers are responsible for safeguarding coastal and inland waters from external attacks from other nations.

• Special Anti-Robbery and Anti-Narcotics Units

These police units were created to deal with organized gangs that may plan attacks on people’s properties.

They also ensure drug dealers and abusers have no place in Tanzania.

Military Equipment of the Tanzania Army

The Tanzanian weapons can be subdivided into infantry, armored personnel carriers, and tanks.

There are small arms like pistols categorized as semi-automatic pistols, which originated in Belgium, Czechoslovakia, and Canada originality and a machine pistol that originated from the Soviet Union.

Tanzania also has submachine guns.

It also has different types of rifles, including semi-automatic, assault rifle, battle rifle, and bolt-action rifle.

Machine guns are grouped as medium machine guns, light machine guns, squad automatic, general-purpose machine guns, and heavy machine guns.

The country also has rocket-propelled grenade launchers and Automatic grenade launchers.

Anti-tank Weapons

Tanzania has a recoilless rifle whose originality is from the United States and China.

Vehicles Used by Tanzanian Military

Main Battle tank was delivered to Tanzania from China since 2021 and has a quantity of 5, while the other, with one, hasa  quantity of 15.

Medium tank was delivered by East Germany from 1979-1980.

Light tank was delivered by both the United Kingdom and China.

• Infantry Fighting Vehicles

The infantry fighting vehicle has a quantity of 12 and originates from China.

• Scout cars

It was delivered by the Soviet Union from 1978 to 1979.

• Armored Personnel Carriers

Their origin is the Soviet Union and China.

• Mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles

It was delivered in 2009 from South Africa.

• Utility vehicles

Its originality is India and the US, and was sold via the U.S. military sales program.

• Artillery

Rocket artillery consists of multiple rocket launchers of quantities 58 and 12, delivered by China, having originated from the Soviet Union and China.

Mortal carriers were delivered by China in 2014.

• Mortars

It comprises infantry mortars and mortars from the Soviet Union and China.

• Field artillery

It has a howitzer and a field gun from the Soviet Union and China.

• Air Defense Systems

Man-portable air-defense systems originate from the Soviet Union.

• Towed anti-aircraft

It consists of an anti-aircraft gun and an autocannon, and it also originates from the Soviet Union.
