Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops saved a crew from a burning ship on October 29, 2025.
In a statement, KDF said the officers are from the Special Boat Unit (SBU), serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) and deployed at Kismayo Seaport.
KDF said the troops responded to a distress call after a dhow caught fire off the coast of Kismayo.
The vessel, MSV FAZLERABBI, had departed from the Port of Kismayo en route to Dubai when it caught fire approximately nine kilometers northeast of the port.
KDF said the troop saved the 16 people who were on the ship and later handed them to the Port Authority.
“In a coordinated rescue effort with local boats, the SBU personnel successfully rescued all 16 crew members on board. The survivors were later handed over to the Port Authority for further attention and assistance,” KDF said.
