Kenyan lawmakers from the National Assembly and the Senate hosted a delegation of German lawmakers from the Bundestag who were on a study tour of the Parliament of Kenya.

The engagement was held under the Kenya-German Parliamentary Friendship group.

The meeting that was held on October 30th gave a platform for legislators from both Parliaments to exchange best practices from their respective jurisdictions.

Baringo Central MP, Joshua Kandie, led a group of Kenyan delegates, while Thomas Rachel led the German delegation.

What Two Groups Discussed

Both Parliamentary groups held extensive discussions about Parliamentary diplomacy and perspectives around mutual interest.

Additionally, they also explored new avenues for cooperation in key areas including governance, trade, education, renewable energy, and sustainable development.

German delegation encouraged Kenyans to support a partnership program for sectoral collaboration.

“Let us work together in areas of the economy, climate change, renewable energy, and the field of qualification for the young generation. We wish to get to know how the youth can be assisted by your Parliament to grow”, said Thomas.

What Kenya Wants to Learn from Germany

On the other side, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna reaffirmed to the visiting team that Kenya is willing and eager to learn from Germany.

He said Kenya aspires to learn Germany’s rule of law, climate change, and youth empowerment.

Sifuna also stressed the importance of motivating and nurturing youths to assume leadership roles in the country.

What German Delegation Told Kenyan

German lawmakers urged Kenyan legislators to develop a platform where children can engage in Parliamentary business without leaning toward particular political parties, citing a similar practice in Germany.

“Through a group called Youth Bunge, Kenyan youths are allowed to attend Senate sittings to learn the procedures of law formulation and other House business”, Senator Crystal Asige explained.

Dagoretti South MP, John Kiarie, urged the two legislatures to collaborate in advancing digital diplomacy in the modern world.

According to him, this would create significant opportunities for young people not only in Kenya but across Africa, which would, in turn, alleviate the immigration pressure currently faced by European countries.

The Bundestag delegation, described as the “heart of German democracy,” appreciated Kenyan lawmakers and promised to increase Parliamentary partnerships.
