Kenyans to Get Free ID Replacements for Six Months as Govt Waives Fee

The Ministry of Interior has removed the KSh 1,050 fee charged during the application for ID Card replacement.

In a gazette notice dated October 30, Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen said ID replacement will be free for six months from October 30, 2025.

“Despite subrule (1), the fees prescribed in the Sixth Schedule in respect of Duplicate/Replacement and Change of Particulars shall be nil for a period of six months, with effect from the date of commencement of these rules,” reads part of the notice.

In a statement on X, Murkomen said the Government has issued a special gazette notice waiving the fees charged for the replacement of IDs and changing of particulars for a period of six months.

He explained that the move is in line with President William Samoei Ruto’s directive aimed at ensuring that every Kenyan acquires the document, which is a crucial access point to government services and other opportunities.

Murkomen said the waiver follows the government’s other reforms, which include free issuance to first-time ID applicants, abolition of the extra-vetting requirement for border counties, and the scrapping of authentication fees for birth certificates when applying for IDs and passports.

“I urge the public to take advantage of this waiver period to get IDs so as not to miss out on opportunities,” he added.
