The Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) has issued a traffic advisory warning motorists against using roads in Elgeyo Marakwet County following a major landslide that rendered several routes impassable.

In a statement released on November 1, 2025, the agency urged motorists to seek alternative routes and follow directions from traffic officers and emergency personnel working to secure affected areas.

“Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes for the time being and comply with any directives from traffic officers and emergency personnel deployed on the roads to prevent further incidents,” read part of the statement signed by Acting Director General Eng. J.K. Magondu.

Death Toll Rises as Search and Rescue Continue

Meanwhile, the government has confirmed that 15 people have lost their lives in the Marakwet East landslide tragedy, while 30 others remain unaccounted for.

In an update issued Saturday morning, Cabinet Secretary for the Interior and National Administration, Kipchumba Murkomen said a coordinated multi-agency response is underway to locate missing persons and assist survivors.

“We have managed to evacuate 25 injured people for further medical attention,” Murkomen said, adding that the government was working closely with humanitarian agencies to provide relief to displaced families.

“Sadly, 15 people lost their lives in this unfortunate tragedy, while 30 people are still unaccounted for,” he added.

Multi-Agency Teams Deployed

Murkomen confirmed that a joint rescue operation involving the military, police, National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs), the county government, and humanitarian organizations is ongoing.

“Ongoing search and rescue efforts are being undertaken by a multi-agency team comprising the military, police, NGAOs, the county government, and humanitarian organizations,” he said.

He noted that several households at risk of further landslides had been moved to safer grounds, and a desk for reporting missing persons had been established to coordinate family tracing.
