Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has sent a message of condolence to the affected families of the deadly rockfall in the Kibendo area of Keiyo North constituency, Elgeyo Marakwet County, that claimed the lives of two people and left three others injured on Sunday night.
In a statement released on November 3, the CS expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and appreciated emergency responders for their quick response.
“Last night, a rockfall incident in Kibendo area in Keiyo North claimed two lives with three others injured .
I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the deceased and wish a quick recovery to those who were injured,” said Murkomen.
He further commended the County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet and the Kenya Red Cross “for their quick response and continued alertness to disaster incidents in the area.”
Murkomen noted that as heavy rainfall continues to fall in several parts of the country,the risk of landslides remains high especially along the Kerio Valley region where several landslides have been reported in the past few weeks.

“We continue to call on residents in the region to be aware of their surroundings and to report any signs of earth movement to local authorities,” he urged
The comments made by the Cabinet Secretary come amid ongoing rescue and recovery efforts in Elgeyo Marakwet, where multiple landslides caused by a heavy rainfall left dozens of people dead and many displaced.

Authorities have since issued fresh alerts ,warnings to the people living in the steep slope and escarpment regions to move to safer grounds as the rains persist
