Former Principal Secretary (PS) to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Macharia Kamau, has condemned a “criminal and traumatizing” attack on his property in Diani Galu, Kinondo.
Vandals reportedly broke into Macharia’s residence, destroyed property, and threw items onto the road.
Macharia expressed shock at the incident, saying he woke up to the terrible news of the attack on his Diani property.
He explained that the assailants vandalized his home, broke down doors, destroyed furniture, and threw his belongings out.
“They broke all my items in the house and proceeded to throw out everything onto the road,” he said.
According to the ambassador, the intruders outnumbered his security personnel, leaving them unable to contain the situation.
“When they came in the morning, they overwhelmed my security because there were so many,” he noted, adding that his housekeeper was left “terribly traumatized.”
He clarified that the incident was not politically motivated but rather a criminal act tied to the deteriorating state of law and order in the area.
“In fact, it is clearly a criminal activity motivated by the breakdown of law and order in the Okunda area,” he said.
Macharia criticized local authorities for failing to enforce the law and uphold court orders, saying the problem was not isolated.
“This is not a unique happening. It has happened before up and down the coast,” he stated.
He further lamented that “the situation has been exacerbated by the inability of law enforcement officers to enforce the law. The courts’ decisions are being ignored, the police are compromised, and other local elements have decided to pursue whatever activities they wish to pursue.”

The ambassador linked the attacks to alleged efforts by local businessmen to illegally acquire private property.
“They have been driven by local businessmen who are trying to get their hands on people’s property,” he said.
He revealed that he had previously cautioned some businessmen in Diani and Galu to stop targeting private lands.
“I have had once or twice to request local businessmen to cease from trying to get their hands on people’s property, including mine,” he added.

Macharia stated that he was abroad when the incident occurred.
“I happen to be in Serbia, in Belgrade, where I’m attending a conference on competitiveness in turbulent times,” he said.
He noted the irony of the situation, as he was in Europe discussing stability while his home faced chaos.
He appreciated the swift support from neighbors and colleagues who came to the aid of his staff.
“They rallied to my support, helped my staff, and stabilized the situation,” he said.
Macharia also revealed that the attackers had brought a bulldozer to demolish his building, an act that was only stopped through community intervention.
“This was only caught in the nick of time because of intervention from all over,” he said.
Expressing gratitude, the ambassador concluded, “I’m grateful for those who helped me and made the community that I live in feel like home.”
