The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) raided the homes and offices of senior officials in the State Department for Sports and several businesspeople over allegations of embezzling KSh3.8 billion.

The commission, executing search warrants, is investigating claims of illegal acquisition of public property and abuse of office involving top officials in the department.

EACC said the investigations primarily focuses on claims of unlawful acquisition of public property and abuse of top officials in Sports Department.

However, the alleged offences happened in 2020/2021 and 2025/2026 financial years.

“The operation, which was pursuant to Court Orders, is part of ongoing investigations at the State Department for Sports in relation to allegations of unlawful acquisition of Ksh3,800,563,277 by senior officials, during Financial Years 2020/2021 and 2025/2026,” the commission stated.

According to EACC, they used companies to launder the stolen funds by routing payments through multiple accounts before converting into personal assets.

The crackdown was conducted across several counties including Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos, Nyeri, and Nanyuki where the commission recovered Ksh 3.58 milion in cash, land tittle deeds and several high-end vehicles as part of evidence.

How Money Was Allegedly Looted According to EACC

Suspects allegedly stole billions through fraudulent procurement deals and inflated tenders awarded to travel and logistics firms linked to ministry officials.

Additionally, fake contracts reportedly involved exaggerated billing for services such as athlete travel, accommodation, and logistics for international sports events.
