Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) has been vital for the movement of people, goods, and services from different parts of the country to Mombasa.
The Nairobi – Mombasa SGR was first launched on May 31, 2025, by the former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

There are various ways in which an individual can book SGR train ticket to Mombasa, including online booking, dialing USSD code *639#, or visiting the Kenya Railways website.
Visit the official verified Kenya Railways website or navigate through the portal of Madaraka Express “metickets.krc.co.ke.”
Click on the trip details and fill in the required information like the type of train that day, date of departure, and from where to Mombasa.
Additionally, fill in your personal details as per the online document and make your payment through mobile money, debit/credit card, and bank transfers, among others.
You will be notified via SMS or email about your ticket number.

Alternatively, a passenger may dial *639# on the phone to book the train by following some required steps.
Select the book train option, and fill in the travel details as requested.
You are required to provide passengers necessary information and details.
Select payment and wait for a prompt notification to pop up on your phone and verify the payment by providing M-Pesa PIN.
After successful payment, you will get a summary notification about your booking details through SMS.
In most cases, the SGR station normally operates from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm, and therefore an individual is advised to visit between that timeline to make a booking.
You will be required to provide all details required, and if they are satisfactory, you will pay for the ticket fee through bank transfers, mobile money, cash, or debit/credit card.
Immediately after payment, you will be given the ticket at the counter.

International Travelers Can Also Make Bookings
Passengers abroad can also book the SGR train through a travel agent like East Africa Shuttles that usually accepts other modes of payment such as PayPal or Pesapal.
You will liaise with the management of the hotel to book a ticket for you and also provide the required personal information.
After payment, the ticket will be provided at your hotel or airport upon arrival.
