Winnie Odinga, daughter of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, spoke on November 15 at the ODM 20th Celebration in Mombasa, explaining the party’s role in Kenya’s broad-based government.
“Since Raila left us, we have been feeling people pushing us. We have not had a chance to rest,” Winnie said, acknowledging the pressures faced by ODM.
She explained the importance of unity within the party. “Coming together is better for us than everyone crying in their own corner,” she said, urging party members to prioritize collaboration over personal grievances.
Way Forward for ODM
Addressing the party’s involvement in the coalition government, Winnie explained, “When it came to the matter of a broad-based government, the people of ODM entrusted one person with the management of that relationship, and that person was Raila.”
She raised concerns about the current handling of that relationship.
“That relation is complicated, and therefore we are looking and wondering whether those who are taking upon themselves to manage it now are capable? That is the question for the people of ODM to answer,” she said.
Winnie concluded by calling for a consultative approach within the party.
“We need to go back to the people and see who the people want to pick to manage that same relationship,” she said, signaling that ODM may review its strategy in the coalition government.
