Roam Introduces Kenya’s First Universal Fast Charging Station for Electric Vehicles

Share

Electric mobility firm Roam has launched Kenya’s first universal fast-charging station for light electric vehicles (LEVs), rolling out a system that can give vehicles a range of up to 20 kilometres under five minutes and marking a significant step toward nationwide electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.

The new branded Roam point station provides 24 hours of self-service fast charging, which helps ease long-standing frustrations among electric Motorcycle and tuk-tuk operators who often face long queues to contend with, restricted station hours, and compatibility issues at existing swap and charge facilities.

The riders are able to pay via SMS, M-PESA (USSD), or the Roam App, creating a fully automated experience aimed at making charging as convenient as fueling.

Roam Point is designed to use Type 6 connectors as well as open-charge standards, which means it is compatible with all LEVs that are based on the same specifications that including electric motorbikes, three-wheelers, and small electric passenger cars.

Built on Universal Standards

According to the company, this strategy is interoperability-based and common standards, which is essential to unlocking mass EV adoption in Kenya.

“These Roam points are the first credible solution to scaling up the use of electric vehicles across Kenya,” the company noted.

Strengthening the Battery-Ownership Model

Roam Country Manager Habib Lukaya said that the station enhances the battery ownership strategy of the company, which makes the riders own and operate their own batteries rather than rely exclusively on swaps.

“The Roam Point builds on the battery ownership model, which gives riders full control of their batteries, enabling them to ride everywhere and charge anywhere,” Lukaya said.

Whether it’s home charging, hub rental, or fast charging on the go, we want to empower our riders with the option that suits them well.”

Nationwide Rollout Begins 2026

The company intends to roll out more Type 6 fast chargers nationwide from 2026, positioning Roam as the operator of Africa’s fast-charging network dedicated to light electric vehicles.
