Kenyans Warned Not to Use Water From Select Rivers

Share

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has cautioned residents of Uasin Gishu County and surrounding areas against using water from sections of the Kipkarren–Bindura–Kesses river system after a lorry carrying an unidentified chemical overturned and spilled its contents into the water.

A multi-agency team from the county government visited the scene in Matharu, Timboroa, cordoned off the area, and collected samples for testing at the Government Chemist.

Authorities said precautionary trenches were dug to divert the chemicals from flowing further downstream as the investigation continues.

NEMA confirmed that the lorry was en route to a neighboring country and that officials have the Material Safety Data Sheet for the substance.

“We have established that the said lorry was destined for a neighboring country, and we have the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).”

As a precaution, Nabkoi water treatment plant, Kesses water treatment facility, and Moi University’s water supply have been cordoned off to prevent contamination.

Officials urged residents to avoid using water from the affected river for drinking, cooking, or livestock purposes until laboratory results are released.

“Members of the public are advised not to use water from the affected river for drinking and other domestic purposes, either by humans or animals, until analysis of the collected samples is complete.”

NEMA Directives to the Public

The agency also urged the public to watch for unusual signs, such as discolored water, foaming, plant wilting, or any abnormalities along the riverbanks, and report them immediately.

The lorry has since been towed to Burnt Forest Police Station, where authorities oversaw the denaturing of the spilled mixture to minimize environmental damage.

NEMA commended members of the public and response teams for their cooperation, noting that further updates will be issued once the chemical analysis is complete.

“We appreciate the cooperation shown by the members of the public and the multi-agency team.”
