Jeff Mwaura Koinange MBS, born on 7 January 1966, is one of Kenya’s most celebrated journalists, a media icon whose influence spans continents, generations, and platforms.
Best known today as the host of Jeff Koinange Live (JKL) on Citizen TV since 2017, he has spent decades shaping national conversations with his signature interviewing style and authoritative presence.
His media footprint also extends to radio, where he co-hosted the HOT 96 breakfast show alongside Nick Odhiambo under Royal Media Services.
Beyond television and radio, Koinange’s visibility broadened in 2019 when he was selected as a judge on East Africa’s Got Talent, joining Gaetano Kagwa, Makeda Mahadeo and Vanessa Mdee.
“It was an honour to spotlight Eastern Africa’s creative energy,” he remarked, underlining his support for regional arts and talent.
Born in Kenya and a grandson of independence-era figure Koinange wa Mbiyu, Jeff’s background reflects a blend of heritage and ambition.

Koinange’s media journey began with an academic pursuit in the United States.
Between 1987 and 1989, he studied at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, graduating with an associate degree.
He later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in broadcast journalism from New York University.
He has often credited these years for shaping his global worldview and sharpening his passion for storytelling.
Before his breakthrough at CNN, Koinange worked for ABC News from 1991 to 1992, later joining NBC News as a producer in 1994.
In 1995, he joined Reuters Television, covering Africa extensively and rising to chief producer from 1999 to 2001.
His appointment as CNN’s Africa correspondent in 2001 marked one of the most defining phases of his career.
For CNN International, he covered some of the continent’s most turbulent events, including the Darfur crisis, civil wars in Sierra Leone and Liberia, and the famine in Niger, reporting that earned him an Emmy Award.
He also reported beyond Africa, notably on Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath and developments in Iraq.
In 2007, controversy struck when the Nigerian government accused his reporting on the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) of being “staged”, a claim CNN denied.
On 29 May 2007, CNN announced he was no longer with the network, ending a storied six-year chapter.
Seven months after leaving CNN, Koinange joined K24, hosting the Capital Talk show and becoming one of the early faces of the station.
He later revived Jeff Koinange Live, which moved to Citizen TV and became one of Kenya’s most-watched talk shows.

Behind the commanding public persona lies a deeply personal story of resilience.
Jeff and his wife, Shaila, battled for years to conceive.
“The greatest challenge for my wife and I during that time was having a child. We tried everything, IVF, the whole shebang, but it wouldn’t work for the longest time,” he revealed.
Their persistence eventually paid off when they welcomed their son, Jamal Mbiyu Koinange, a milestone Jeff describes as life-changing.
Married since 1998, after his first marriage ended earlier, Jeff remains fiercely protective of his family’s privacy.
Having grown up without a father, he has spoken openly about being intentional in giving his son the stable, dual-parent upbringing he missed.
He lives in Nairobi’s Kitisuru neighbourhood, where he owns multiple high-value properties while keeping his personal life low-key.
Jeff’s awards go beyond the Emmy and the Peabody recognitions.
In 2006, he received the Vernon Jarrett Bronze Medal for “Best Feature” for his reporting on mass rapes in Congo.
In 2008, President Mwai Kibaki awarded him the Moran of the Burning Spear (MBS), one of Kenya’s highest civilian honours, recognising his exceptional contribution to journalism.
He is also active in philanthropy.
In 2017, he spearheaded a project to develop and stock a library in Kibera, giving children access to books and learning materials.
He has spoken at numerous forums, including the Journalism in Africa forum hosted by Fatuma’s Voice.
A passionate country music lover, Jeff has performed alongside Kenyan country artist Sir Elvis at multiple concerts, including the 2019 Country Roads event at Thika Greens Golf Resort.
